There are myriad challenges to success – every day seems to bring more nuances, more challenges, more aspects to understand. The Densus Group is first and foremost a decision-support organization, a firm that equips its clients with the capabilities to succeed in addressing their most pressing solutions by understanding what is happening around them, anticipating events, and having the decision making processes and graduation of response to respond accordingly and effectively.

Clients of the Densus Group succeed in achieving and surpassing their goals by:

  • understanding their environment, resources, threats and opportunities,
  • anticipating situations and having the knowledge, capabilities, decision making processes and leadership structures to manage those situations, by
  • actively engaging with their environment to gather information that can be processed into actionable intelligence, that can be translated into effective operations, and
  • continually learning and improving their processes through the application of useful metrics to ensure capabilities are sustained.

The Densus Approach

All activities are structured around understanding risk, the likelihood of both threats and opportunities. All risks boil down to operational, reputational, physical and financial, and it is by understanding these various aspects and establishing how and why they are affected that we are able to solve our clients’ problems. Our practices such as risk management, capability development, situation awareness, capital advisory all interact in every situation.

Group Methodology

The Densus Group combines diverse international experience with robust academic knowledge to provide industry-leading solutions. Engagements follow our overarching methodology; to fully understand both problem and context before designing and delivering sustainable solutions based on the organizational culture, skills, and available resources within dictated constraints. Ongoing support and outsourcing may be the solution that best fits the client requirement.

The Densus Group supports its clients with the following capability areas:

  • Audit and Assessment
  • Risk Management
  • Situation Awareness
  • Decision-Making
  • Advice to Capital
  • Protestor and Demonstrator Management
  • Use of Force

While appearing diverse these capability areas are not only complementary, but essential if clients are to receive the best possible support across the range of threats.

Whether our client wishes:

  • a risk assessment and investor-perspective review in order to ensure that their business case and plan stand up to scrutiny
    • and subsequent assistance in finding the funds,
  • to understand the threat posed by protestors and demonstrators to the city hosting a G8 or G20 type event
    • and audit of the police response,
  • an assessment of a country or jurisdiction's ability to police itself within current conventions of the rule of law,
    • creating the ability for a jurisdiction to manage crowds in an internationally compliant manner,
  • identify the correct response to threats against the Board and management of a major representational body in Washington, DC or
  • the development of doctrine and tactics for elements of the US Marines to successfully engage with the environment around them to drive de-escalated operations,

the Densus Group draws on its unique methodology to deliver an effective, sustainable solution that is grounded in the facts rather than perceptions.

'Densus'?

Sempronius Densus, a Centurion, gave his life upholding his standards of integrity and professionalism; these are the founding principles of our firm and as such, so critical to us that we honor him by naming the company after him.

As a Centurion in the Praetorian Guard, Densus was tasked with protecting the Deputy Emperor. On January 10, 69, Emperor Galba named Piso Luscianus to replace him; Marcus Otho, who had expected to be named, set out to have the Emperor assassinated. By January 15, 69, when the assassins struck, the Praetorian Guard had been bribed, and stood aside. Sempronius Densus was the only member of the Praetorians to protect the Emperor, ultimately giving his life in service.

Densus is a shining pillar of integrity, professionalism, loyalty and courage – we honor him and the virtues he gave his life for by bearing his name.

In today’s tumultuous times, the members of the Densus Group demonstrate the characteristics of professionalism, integrity, loyalty and courage for all of our clients at all times by addressing their needs and easing their concerns in any situation that confronts them.

Assessment and Audit

If the problem and context aren’t properly understood, finding the optimal, effective, efficient solution simply isn’t possible. This understanding may be sought in advance during an assessment, or during an audit conducted during deliver, or following a particular event or trend. Utilizing a breadth of perspectives our methodology is tailored to support problems as diverse as ensuring the efficient and effective implementation of a major government contract, reporting on the causes of a negative law enforcement incident or devising the best approach for delivering effective policing to an emerging nation state getting to grips with corruption.

Business Continuity and Resilience

Adverse effects can quickly destroy an organization’s ability to operate, its reputation and ultimately its value. At Densus we use an evolved methodology created from our experiences and robust academic grounding, ensuring that our clients are both prepared and able to manage potential or actual adverse situations effectively, minimizing negative effects and, where possible, exploiting any opportunities they may bring.

Capability Development

Organizations must be capable of achieving their goals. Where they are not capable of doing so, a capability gap has arisen. Capability development is the art of understanding the factors that have created the gap, the fundamentals behind the problem the gap is unable to solve – be it dispersing crowds, ensuring effective business continuity, being positioned to exploit the up-side of a sudden situation change, or the useful collection and dissemination of tactical intelligence in a counter-narcotics or counter-terrorism scenario – and delivering a solution that integrates personnel, training, equipment, logistics, political, media and other factors to create the best possible solution.

Capital Advisory

In the investment community, risk/return and price are inexorably linked. However, in situations with a breadth of risk categories including political and security risk, what appears to be a high risk investment may actually be a much better investment than what initially appears to be a much lower risk investment. Integrating investment professionals and risk professionals with expeditionary experience we assist capital in understanding the actual risks involved in potential investments, and assist those seeking to raise money in ensuring that their business cases addresses their particular risks in a manner optimized for the investment community.

Crowd Management

Crowds pose significant operational, physical, reputational and financial risks. Whether in Fallujah or Philadelphia, the management of crowds, particularly those who are non-compliant but non-violent, can critically affect operations, budgets and revenues – particularly during major events. Our techniques minimize the risks to all parties while emphasizing transparency and effective arrest and prosecution of those with genuine criminal intent.

Risk Management

Risks come in many forms; financial, reputational, operational, physical to name but four. Our understanding of risk as integrated across these and other factors enables Densus to provide comprehensive assessments of the complete risks to an organization or project. Equally able to examine a Fortune 500 company’s risk and explaining the stock price implications of security weaknesses, or assessing the risks to a government investing development funds in a client nation and seeking to understand the prospects for achieving their goals, our unique methodologies and combination of perspectives ensures not only added value, but the delivery of systems that use risk as an effective decision making tool, not a series of vertical 'risk' structures.

Situational Awareness

The duty analysts in the Threat Center come from a rare mix of operational backgrounds. Not only do they all have experience of intelligence gathering, analysis and dissemination in an operational role, they are also experienced crowd management operations, both on the ground and in providing actionable intelligence support.

This gives them the ability to 'read between the lines' in protestor statements, identify likely tactics and then turn that into actionable advice for the client, providing clients with a depth of expertise that is unavailable anywhere else, which is important given the speed with which a protestor threat can materialize and inhibit operations.

This depth of expertise available along this one threat dimension is only matched by the experience among analysts and Subject Matter Experts along every threat dimension; this breadth of expertise is constantly available at the end of the telephone to our clients.

Use of Force and Rule of Law

Primarily supporting government, our UoF/RoL capability supports clients by delivering operational capabilities that utilize Human Rights, due process and use of force as levers of operational effectiveness rather than as political necessities forced upon the client organization(s). Our fundamentals benefit military operations - particularly counter-insurgency and MACA - and domestic law enforcement equally.

Training

Training is an essential component in delivering capabilities to clients. Be it command courses and table top exercises or field operations, our training methodology is firmly rooted in developing effective capabilities by understanding the complete requirement and context, and designing content and delivery systems that are tailored to the client’s organizational culture, internal methodologies and systems, current techniques and other considerations.
